Course 1 · Module 3
Linear Algebra
This module covers the branch of mathematics that handles many unknowns at once. You'll see how a method for solving systems of equations, recorded in an ancient Chinese text, became the machinery of vectors and matrices, and how that machinery now ranks search results, moves images on screens, and powers machine learning. It's the branch most likely to be running quietly under the technology you use today.
Module objectives
- Represent a system of linear equations with vectors and matrices and describe what a matrix does to space.
- Explain how linear algebra drives search ranking, computer graphics, and machine learning, and state one open question in the field.
Lessons
- Lesson 1 Linear Algebra: Systems of equations, vectors, and matrices from the Nine Chapters to Gauss You'll solve a system of three equations with a method recorded in an ancient Chinese text and still taught today. You'll see how the numbers in such a system became a matrix, and… 61111h 3m
- Lesson 2 Linear Algebra: Search, graphics, and machine learning: linear algebra at scale You'll see linear algebra at work in three places you use every day: the ranking of search results, the motion of images on a screen, and the machine learning behind many apps… 611111h 33m
